Alcohol abuse disorder (AUD) is a mental condition that involves an inability to control the consumption of alcohol that interferes with the person’s day-to-day life. Consuming alcohol becomes a problem for the person when they are unable to control their intake of alcohol and drink it on a regular basis even when they are facing adverse health and life-related consequences because of it. When the consumption of alcohol becomes persistent, some people may experience withdrawal symptoms which we will talk about later in this blog.

To be diagnosed with Alcohol Use Disorder, an individual must show signs and symptoms that match the criteria of Alcohol Use Disorder as per DSM-5 or ICD-10 criteria, official diagnostic tools available at Remint Health also measure the existence and intensity of AUD in the person.

The signs and symptoms of Alcohol Use Disorder of AUD are:

  1. Intake of alcohol in a large amount or for a longer time than what was intended.

  2. Strong urge to drink alcohol, cravings.

  3. Repeatedly attempting to cut down or control alcohol use but being unable to do so successfully.

  4. Drinking alcohol in situations where it is physically hazardous, such as while driving or operating heavy machinery.

  5. Continuing to use alcohol even when it leads to recurrent physical or psychological problems.

  6. Important social, occupational, or recreational activities are given up or reduced because of alcohol use.

  7. Alcohol use is continued despite knowledge of having a persistent or recurrent physical or psychological problem that is likely to have been caused or exacerbated by alcohol.

  8. Continued to drink even though it was making you feel depressed or anxious or adding to another health problem? Or after having had a memory blackout?

An important note is that everyone with an alcohol use problem will not show all of these symptoms or with the same severity which is measured by several tools and techniques when diagnosing. Here at Remint Health, we provide you with an accurate report of the diagnosis of the drinking problem and customize your treatment plan as per your needs and requirements.

Excessive Alcohol Usage leads to withdrawal symptoms ranging from physical to psychological symptoms like:

  1. Nausea and vomiting

  2. Headache

  3. Auditory disturbances

  4. Agitation or irritability

  5. sweating

  6. Visual disturbances

  7. Tremor

  8. Clouding of sensory reception

  9. Orientation

  10. Anxiety

  11. Sleep disturbances

  12. Mood swings

  13. Loss of appetite

Note that these symptoms may be exhibited from 6 to 12 hours after the consumption of your last drink.

The consumption of alcohol in any amount affects our brain chemistry and may cause physical or psychological problems to some people at some point. Alcohol when taken, has an immediate effect on the body by passing it into your bloodstream and then to your brain. Alcohol has an effect on our behavior and judgment, that is why we lose control over our behavior and cannot walk, talk, or think straight. During the initial stages of drinking, your brain releases a chemical called dopamine which is considered a reward chemical of the brain that gives you pleasure and happiness and makes you feel euphoric.

Even though alcohol releases happy chemicals or dopamine in the brain after drinking. After some time, alcohol becomes problematic by reducing the dopamine activity in the brain and causes an imbalance that can negatively affect our mood which leads to you craving more alcohol to release more dopamine and feel more happy, euphoric, and energetic again and it becomes a toxic cycle until it becomes an addiction. As it is always said, too much of anything is a problem. This regular and unhealthy drinking pattern gradually starts showing its negative effect on our mind and body and hampering our social, occupational, and personal lives.
