A simple story about managing stress

One day, Raj decided to try something new. He bought a set of colored pencils and a coloring book. At first, he felt silly and thought it was childish, but he decided to give it a try.

As Raj started coloring, he noticed that his mind was no longer focused on his work stress. He found himself fully immersed in the coloring, and it felt like time had flown by. When he finished coloring, he felt relaxed and refreshed.

From that day on, Raj made coloring a part of his daily routine. He realized that taking a break and doing something creative was a great way to manage his stress. He even started experimenting with other creative hobbies like knitting and singing in a choir.

Raj's story shows that sometimes the solution to our problems may be found in unexpected places. By trying new things and getting to know ourselves better, we can discover new ways to manage our stress and live happier lives.

Understand a better way to manage stress with this story

 

Rahul is a middle-aged man who lives in Mumbai. He has been working in the same company for over 10 years and has recently been promoted to a senior position. However, with the new position came new responsibilities and increased workload. Rahul found himself getting more stressed and anxious as he struggled to keep up with the demands of his new role.

One day, Rahul spoke to his friend who suggested that he try some stress coping mechanisms. His friend told him that there are two types of coping mechanisms: 

  1. problem-focused
  2. control-focused.

Problem-focused coping is when you try to solve the problem that is causing stress. For example, if the stress is caused by work overload, you could delegate some tasks to others or prioritize your work better.

Control-focused coping is when you try to control your reaction to the stressor. For example, if the stress is caused by a difficult co-worker, you could try to avoid getting into arguments with them and maintain a professional distance.

Rahul realized that he had been using control-focused coping mechanisms like avoidance and distraction, which were not helping him solve the underlying problem. 

He decided to switch to problem-focused coping and sought advice from his colleagues on how to manage his workload more effectively. With their help, he was able to delegate some of his tasks and prioritize better, which helped him reduce his stress levels.

From this experience, Rahul learned that sometimes it's important to face the problem head-on and work towards a solution, rather than just trying to control his reaction to it.

Sometimes in life, instead of avoiding a problem, we must try to solve the problem.

Ride the wave: Imagine that the craving is like a wave in the ocean. Rather than trying to fight against it, just let it be. As the wave rises, remind yourself that it will eventually come down.

Focus on your breath: Keep your attention on your breath, and try to breathe deeply and slowly. This can help you stay calm and centered as the craving passes.

Be kind to yourself: Remember that cravings are a normal part of recovery from alcohol use disorder. Be gentle with yourself, and try not to judge or criticize yourself for having a craving.

Using the urge surfing approach can help you build mindfulness and coping skills that can be useful in many areas of your life, not just when it comes to alcohol cravings.
